I think that is why the error happened; I think a normal map can only be accurately converted into a height map as a single piece, since it has to use data in that piece to figure out the highest and lowest points - at least this is how I am guessing it works. The problem could probably be fixed if the entire map were done as a single piece. Do you think CrazyBump could handle a 16k or 8k map? I downloaded CrazyBump to do some tests, and using the full normal map to make the height map does fix the problem
I think it should easily be able to convert a 16k map too.
